Development and application of analytical methodology in ion mobility mass spectrometry in the field of metabolomics
Abstract
The research project concerns the development of novel analytical methods employing a state-of-the-art analytical platform, which combines both drift-tube ion mobility spectrometry and high resolution mass spectrometry. The combination of these two analytical principles represents a new mass spectrometry-based technology and will be used in the field of metabolomics for the first time. The new system increases analytical selectivity significantly as it provides separation of analytical compounds not only by mass differences, but also by structural differences (isomers). By adding chromatographic separation at the front end of the platform, four-dimensional datasets can be obtained. Technical developments and analytical strategies will be tested and evaluated within the project in close cooperation with Agilent Technologies in Santa Clara (USA).
