EU-LIFE+ - Urban Lake - Alte Donau (LIFE12ENV/AT/000128). Measure B.3: Beavermonitoring – Followup survey 2017
Abstract
In the course of the 'Life +' project 'Urban lake - Alte Donau', both an animal- and citizen-oriented beaver management is implemented, with the objectives of reducing beaver conflicts (e.g. damage on valuable tree species) but, also, promoting a stable population development. For evaluating the beaver population development at the Alte Donau, a first monitoring was conducted in the years 2014/2015 to record territory borders and activity hotspots, active lodges, as well as family sizes and reproductive success. Based on these findings, a follow-up monitoring is essential for eliciting spatiotemporal dynamics regarding the number of territories in general, the size of these territories and activity hotspots. Moreover, visual observations will be used to determine changes in group sizes and reproductive success over the years.
