Implementation and evaluation of a welfare monitoring scheme in SalzburgMilch dairy farms
Abstract
The present project ‚Implementation and evaluation of welfare monitoring in dairy farms’ takes place in connection with the re-branding of SalzburgMilch, which also includes a pioneer role in the area of animal welfare. It is based on existing approaches to farm animal welfare assessment and aims at developing assessment protocols which may be rolled out on a large scale in commercial dairy farms. The project therefore supports the implementation of an animal health/welfare monitoring scheme in all farms supplying SalzburgMilch taking the current level of health and welfare, feasibility and the famers' view into account. Primarily it focuses on farm assurance with regard to animal welfare, however at the same time it is the aim to provide useful information to the farmers which may be used for improvement of housing and herd management.
