"Malse-Muschel" - preservation and restoration of the natural environment of the freshwater pearl mussel in the Maltsch river catchment
Abstract
The river mussel is decisively influenced by the water quality and the physical/chemical conditions of river sediments. The "Malsemuschel" project, which is financed by Interreg, is aimed at assessing and possibly improving the abiotic environmental conditions, in particular at reducing the currently high levels of fine sediment and sand in the river corridor. The aim of the project is to establish comprehensive monitoring on both sides of the border, to identify and quantify the erosion potential of the catchment area and to develop solutions for sources of sediment inputs. The entire process is accompanied by an intensive public participation program. The processing area covers the entire catchment area of Maltsch river. This extends from the origin in the municipality of Sandl to its mouth in the Vltava / Moldau river in the area of České Budějovice and covers an area of approximately 979 km². The main river has a length of 96 km. On its way to the Vltava, the Maltsch also flows through the Římov reservoir designed as a drinking water reservoir. In addition, parts of the Maltsch and their surrounding areas are registered as Natura 2000 sites (CZ0311039 Novohradské hory, CZ0314022 Upper Malt, AT3115000 Maltsch).
