Investigation of benthic invertebrates in small brooks of south-east Styria
Abstract
The current tyoplogical allocation of selected small brooks in south-east Styria ("Grabenland") according to the WFD scheme will be reviewed. Based on the results of the 2016 Grabenlandbach study, a further investigation of the BQE macrozoobenthos of this river-type will be performed to revise the current typological classifications according to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the associated Austrian methodology for the assessment of the ecological status (BQE macrozoobenthos). The aim of the planned study is to examine selected streams in their "Inner Differentiation" in more detail by means of additional sampling in order to precise the data. To document the impact of the season on the ecological status class, seven selected investigation sites in the aquatic bioregion 14, "Grazer Feld and Grabenland" will be investigated. One of the main research areas of the BOKU IHG working group Benthic Ecology is the characterization of the special river-type "intermittent waters" on the basis of characteristic MZB species and is working on a WFD-compliant method for the ecological assessment of these waters. In addition qualitative elevations of the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera fauna (adult stages) by means of aerial-nets and light-traps at selected investigation sites will be performed.
