Effects of desiccation on the self-purification capacity of headwater streams: Consequences for the stream management
Abstract
The project aims at analysing the effects of drought on the self-purification capacity and the water quality of streams. We will identify features which determine the resistance and vulnerability of streams to the impacts of desiccation via field sampling and laboratory experiments. Besides, we will model potential changes in water quality owing to water scarcity, employing a modelling strategy based on 2D hydrodynamic modelling and upscaling of the potentially desiccated areas. Our results will be incorporated into a guideline for assessing the risk of water quality deterioration in streams due to droughts.
