Development of a monitoring programme to assess a contaminated site in the Autonomous Province of Bozen
Abstract
In the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol) at the site "Biotop Fischerspitz" (at estuary level Eisack / Etsch), tarry demolition material from a former gas plant in Bolzano was found during extension measures of a fishing pond. After an initial evaluation and expert assessment, increased levels of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), heavy metals (Al, Mg, Pb, etc.) and other pollutants cannot be excluded. As a result, the State Agency for the Environment, the Office for Waste Management, the Agency for Civil Protection, the Office for Torrent and Avalanche Control South have pointed out that soil remediation of the contaminated area should be initiated. Further, nearby contaminations along the Eisack-Etsch estuary cannot be excluded after preliminary talks. The Institute for Waste Management of the BOKU was therefore commissioned to develop a monitoring concept based on a literature search as well as on the evaluation of chemical analyses, and consequently to derive recommendations for action.
