Function oriented materials
Abstract
Wood and wood based composites are one of the most important materials. To stay competitive the development of function oriented materials is needed to expand the utilization of wood. For designing and engineering function oriented materials increased durability, reduction of weight by maintaining or improving the strength are topics of major interest. The colour, texture and structure and hygroscopic properties make wood popular for interior uses. However, natural and artificial emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) out of panels are a topic of great concern to the public and new regulations are discussed. The composites need to fulfil existing and future criteria. Evaluation of VOC, however, requires reliable analytical methods, which will be developed in the fundamental part of the project. Investigation of the influence of the anisotropic behaviour of wood on the VOC emissions from wood and wood products will be carried out. Furthermore, the monitoring of the influences of indoor climate, including dynamically changing environmental conditions and interactions, on VOC-emissions is of interest. In conclusion it is claimed that: understanding the influence of particle geometry and structure as well as the characteristics of VOC emissions of engineered wood products enables the development of materials with lower density or higher strength, improved stability and reduced VOC-emissions.
