COpernicus Applications and services for Low impact agriculture in Australia

Based on the experiences carried out in Europe, we aim at developing Copernicus-based services for supporting the sustainable use of water and nutrients in the agricultural systems of Australia.

In Australia the sustainable use of irrigation water is a priority for agriculture. The 2016 State of the Environment Report identified risks to Australian inland water environments from water abstraction and interception due to demands of a growing population, and the requirements to extract more water from an increasingly water scarce environment to meet consumption and production needs. The 2019 environmental disaster of the iconic Murray Darling Basin (Australia’s food bowl) highlights the need for landscape scale monitoring systems that can better support decision making and policy for sustainable use of water and nutrients in multi-functional landscapes.

Knowledge and expertise have been developed in Europe in the field of Earth Observation -based services with agriculture, through co-creation and participatory approaches, and by transferring the results of academic research to industry through spin-off companies in different EU countries. Although the dimension of these enterprises is still rather small, they represent in many cases consolidated examples of entrepreneurship open to expansion through their flexibility and they keep strong links with the research and academic community.

This type of process is not yet widespread in Australia. Now thanks to the new Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS) we are able to scale out our experience to Australia, and to this end we need a network of collaborators comprised of local research institutions and stakeholders to tailor our technological propositions to the context (environmental, economic, social, political and technological) of the local market.
