Inventory of Historical Stone Walls in Frastanz und Satteins - Part 2, 2019
Abstract
With the establishment of modern transport connections, which began in Vorarlberg at the end of the 19th century, many old routes lost their importance. Those old paths were and still are the expression of centuries-old socio-economic connections. Trade in goods, cattle drive and (temporary) migratory took place on them. They thus form an essential part of Vorarlberg's history. Reference has already been made to this cultural-historical significance (see Tiefenthaler, 2004 and 2008). The aim of the pilot study 2018 was to work out the methodology for an inventory of historical ways Vorarlberg and to test it as an example for two selected municipalities. As part of the results presentation and discussion with representatives from the communities and the state, the outstanding questions and recommendations for a follow-up project were pointed out. In the course of a continuation of the project, it is necessary - to determine the depth of preparation for a possible overall assessment of the country. - Are surveys at supraregional level required? Should be focues on historic main traffic axes? Are local links with their historically material substance important sources for historiography of Vorarlberg? - These and other questions call for a well-grounded strategy that includes clear objectives in terms of capture and conservation. - Since many paths do not end on the border of the municipality, it requires a cross-community cooperation. This guarantees access to a wide range of historical materials necessary for a sound historical investigation. The in-depth study of the pilot project will - clearly define the basics and objectives for the preservation of historical paths in Vorarlberg for decision-making. - The project clarifies links with and possible findings in existing tools (GIS tools, font and image databases, archive sources) for a larger project planned and an application-oriented approach. The aim of this project is to give the historical transport routes a firm place among Vorarlberg's cultural heritage. So far, it seems very promising to trace the previous descriptions of relationship, the old maps and reconstructions on site and to search for existing substance, which findings in the course of the Inventory of Historical Stone Walls have already shown. The methodological approach of the project serves as a basis to decide further research and leads to supporting the administration and planning authorities. The findings should be provided internationally through publications. Networking on a scientific level will be enabled. Furthermore, it will call the attention of the users, residents and tourists to the importance of the historical routes and lead to a respectfully handling of the valuable cultural heritage.
