Emerging challenges for municipal sanitary engineering and water pollution control
Abstract
Strategic goals: The project aims at the identification of possible future challenges for the municipal water management due to material and microbiological pollution. The results of the project serve as a basis for political decisions on where the focus of water supply and sanitation will lie in the years to come. In the sense of a comprehensive approach, the project takes into account all paths of entry from the municipal sanitation sector into the environment. In concrete terms these are - treated municipal wastewater from sewage treatment plants, - municipal waste water from combined sewer overflows, - Stormwater discharge from the separate sewer system, - Discharges of stormwater runoff from roads (as far as of municipal origin, i.e. no motorways), - Sewage sludge. In addition, input paths outside the municipal sanitation sector are addressed if it is clear that effective levers can be sensibly applied there. Content objectives: The project will summarise the current state of knowledge and research, possible challenges and approaches to solutions, but also further research needs and gaps in knowledge. The required data from the existing literature will be used; no measurements and no complex modelling (e.g. using MONERIS or MoRe) will be carried out in the project.
