Underground Sun Conversion - Flexible Storage
Abstract
'Underground Sun Conversion – Flexible Storage' aims at an inter-seasonal storage solution for renewable energy. Hydrogen derived from power to gas facilities and carbon dioxide from various sources are injected in depleted natural gas reservoirs. These feed-gases are then converted to renewable methane using a natural metabolic process accomplished by archaea already present in the pore space of the reservoir rock. Storage of generated methane in the same reservoir is possible up to TWh-scale. On demand, so produced renewable geomethane will be utilized via the existing infrastructure in all energy demanding sectors. The technology was developed and basically tested in previous flagship projects, i.e. ‘Underground Sun Storage’ and ‘Underground Sun Conversion’. Consequently, a ready to operate field test facility is already in place and large scale demonstration of the new technology is integral part of this proposal. The combination of the power to methane process with geological storage of fluctuating shares of feed and product gases provides flexibility paralleled with enormous conversion and storage capacity. The development of related services together with need-owners is an integral part of the project.
