LTER Austria: conception and scientific focus of the LTSER Platform Eisenwurzen and coordination of the eLTER University Task Force
Abstract
The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) is a forum established by the EU member states to provide a platform for the formation of European research infrastructures of high strategic relevance. The ESFRI roadmap is published every two to four years as an agreed list of priorities. Recorded infrastructures have ten years to formalize as legal entities. The Integrated European Long-Term Ecosystem, critical zone and socio-ecological systems Research Infrastructure (eLTER RI) has been on the ESFRI roadmap since September 2018. On February 1, 2020, the “Preparatory Phase Project” financed by the European Commission began. The five-year project allows for the detailed planning of the eLTER RI. Another H2020 project, eLTER-PLUS, provides accompanying scientific research. The operators of the national eLTER locations and their financiers (mostly the federal ministries) are required to bring concerted Austrian positions into the eLTER RI detailed planning and implementation.
