Abstract
In the present project, we consider the entire Austrian Danube, together with the lower reaches of its tributaries, as one large meta-ecosystem. Compared to lower sections of the Danube, the Austrian Danube as part of the Upper Danube experienced the highest degree of fragmentation and regulation works. The project’s core consists of four work packages (WP2 – WP5) addressing the following five overriding research questions:
• How do the quality, configuration and connectivity relationships of hydromorphological units at the reach scale change across different spatial settings and temporal (historic, after regulation, partial restoration, future restoration scenarios) time steps? (WP2)
• How do changes in these hydromorphological features influence ecological patterns, processes, and scale relationships (meta-ecosystem framework)? (WP2)
• What was/is the response of biodiversity and ecosystem functions to these changes and how did restoration measures alter/influence these responses so far? (WP3)
• How can a better knowledge about scale-dependent patterns and processes improve management decisions for sustainable use (including restoration measures) and the provision of ecosystem services? (WP4, WP5)
• How will the integrated meta-ecosystem management approach be affected by future changes and to what extent will management interventions influence the resilience of the meta-ecosystem? (WP5)
