Development of a proposal for a practice-oriented wolf management in the cultural landscape of the mountain cantons of Switzerland
Abstract
The following chapters (working title) are provided for the proposal for action: • The wolf - biology and ecology with an emphasis on food needs and use of space • Current status and future development of the wolf population in Switzerland and neighboring countries, including population modeling up to 2035 • Determination of the maximum wolf load capacity in Switzerland (ecological vs. economic) and the favorable conservation status of the wolf population in Switzerland • Challenges with regard to the coexistence between wolf and humans, with a special focus on livestock husbandry in the Alpine region and on dealing with wolves without fear of humans • Overview of the possibilities and limits of herd protection in the alpine area: costs and methods • Legal and practical options for deterring and removing wolves in Switzerland • Wild ecological spatial planning for the wolf: core zones, peripheral zones, free zones • Evaluation of the practicability of current wolf management in Switzerland: protection of livestock and people in the Alpine cantons • Proposal for action for future-oriented wolf management in the Alpine cantons of Switzerland
