Development of advanced markers for the separation of problematic plastics using the example of polyoxymethylenes
Abstract
Polyoxymethylenes (POM) represent a particular challenge in plastics recycling, as POM components interfere with other plastic recycling streams and at the same time can release harmful formaldehyde. In the PLASTMARK project, a marker is to be selected on the basis of a literature research on concepts for marker-based sorting (MBS), which can be used as a tracer, primarily for POM, but also for other plastics. The tracer should not have any negative properties from both a technical and a health point of view. The selected marker should make it possible to detect POM streams prematurely on the basis of its fluorescence properties or on the basis of other separation characteristics and thus to be able to sort them out. In PLASTMARK, laboratory-scale POM marker compounds are to be produced and an initial proof-of-concept carried out. These "advanced compounds" will first undergo material testing and then be distinguished from non-labelled POM compounds using common analytical methods such as X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). This first proof-of-concept will also be tested for its economic viability in terms of upscaling. The development of these laboratory-scale POM marker compounds is to be based on so-called safe-by-design and design-for-recycling concepts in order to ultimately be able to offer innovative solution approaches for increasing the recycling efficiency of problematic plastic waste streams.
