The Societal Relevance of Spontaneous Development of Nature in Cities
Abstract
To cope with climate change and its impacts, urban areas are in high demand of creative and cost-effective solutions. Due to their multifunctional and ressource-effective features, nature-based solutions have gained particular importance in urban planning and policy-making in recent years. Among the solutions discussed, green spaces with a high degree of spontaneous development of nature, such as urban wildscapes or less managed lawns in urban parks, offer particular advantages in terms of adapting to climate change and saving communal costs. From a social point of view, however, their relevance seems to be ambivalent and controversial. This calls for a better understanding of the distribution of their benefits and costs among social groups. In particular, it remains unclear under which conditions such „spontaneous greenspaces“ are preferred or rejected by different segments of society. The project sets out to fill this gap and generate a comprehensive and socially-stratified picture of the public preferences and perceptions of a wide range of spontaneous greenspaces. To this end, a typology of characteristic spontaneous greenspaces will be developed for the city of Vienna. Based on this typology, a photograph-based questionnaire survey will be carried out with a diverse sample of urban residents to examine how public preferences vary across different types of spontaneous greenspaces and social groups. Together with an indepth analysis of the benefits and costs as perceived by survey respondents in these spontaneous greenspaces, the project will develop a valuable knowledge base for the future design and implementation of such greenspaces as a socially inclusive nature-based solution.
