reTHINK.PROTEIN.ADHESIVES
Abstract
Almost all wood products are glued in the course of their manufacture, but increasing environmental and health awareness is intensifying the demand for new, bio-based adhesives. Vegetable proteins are a possible raw material for this as they are available regionally, have good inherent adhesive properties and can be processed as aqueous dispersions. Their use as an adhesive is currently limited primarily by two factors: the lack of moisture resistance of the materials produced with them and the difficult processing due to the high viscosity or the limited solids content of the adhesive. This project aims to investigate how the adhesive and processing properties of proteins can be improved by mechanical treatments. It is intended to systematically reduce and homogenize the particle size of protein dispersions in order to reduce their viscosity. As an alternative to soy proteins, European resources such as corn, wheat, rape, pea or potato proteins are to be made available for the production of adhesives. Their higher proportion of hydrophobic components in comparison to soy proteins makes processing more difficult, but could enable better moisture resistance. It is assumed that mechanical treatment of proteins can change the structures of proteins and thus activate groups from the interior of the molecule to the surface. This could improve the reactivity of the proteins and thus also have a positive influence on the strength of the adhesives. The aim of the project is the production of bio-based adhesives with low viscosity, high solids content and adequate bonding properties.
