Effects of changing recreational use patterns during the Covid-19 pandemic on the ecological integrity of local recreation areas in Vienna - Subproject IHG.
Abstract
Recreational uses of urban and peri-urban recreation areas have tremendous importance in our society. This importance has led to increased pressure for use and altered recreation patterns in the Covid-19 pandemic. However, human activities are also the primary cause of the ongoing rapid global loss of biodiversity. Current management approaches for these spaces that consider economic, ecological, or recreational aspects are poorly linked and harmonized. A better understanding of the interactions between humans and nature is therefore crucial for ecosystem conservation and management. In the #WienerErholungsgebiete project, social media data in the area of the city of Vienna and the surrounding area of Vienna are therefore analyzed for the first time together with data on the state of ecosystems. The subproject focuses on water-related ecosystems. By combining novel research approaches and data sources we try to better understand how recreational activities, water bodies, forests, etc. and their use are interconnected. The results of these analyses should provide important information for the sustainable design of recreational activities in the city of Vienna and the surrounding area, as well as for the further protection of ecosystems.
