ASSESSING AND CONSOLIDATING RECENT ADVANCES ON FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION
Abstract
This project will take the approach that while analysing statistical data can establish a foundation for what makes success, it is rarely persuasive in the face of uncertainty triggered by countervailing numbers, opinions and even biases. Developing a quantitative analysis framework as a springboard, this project will focus on personal experiences and knowledge delivered by leaders, drivers and decisionmakers. These “personal stories” can be more helpful to contextualize scientific advances and restoration success so they can be adapted to other situations. While people involved in resource management in the era of climate change and the Internet may not see themselves in statistical analysis, they often find it easier to identify with, and learn from, the journeys of real people who took on a freshwater restoration mission and brought it to completion. In some cases they will consider their efforts successful; in others climate change or time erased their gains and taught them lessons they can bring to bear on other projects. This project will highlight and consolidate recent scientific advances from the perspectives of the people who made them, pursued them, tested them, modified them, demonstrated them, evaluated them and handed them off to the next generation of scientists and implementers. The project will bring their stories to light to support current leaders, scientists and decisionmakers who face some of the same challenges and dilemmas as they try to figure out: will this work? Is it worth the money, time and effort? Is it the right thing to do for our community, our circumstances? EcoAdvance will cut through the multitude of disparate research communities, platforms, initiatives, and approaches, taking into account a wide range of factors and drivers influencing the success, or otherwise, of different restoration approaches within different environments (including, for example, geographical, governance, social and financial environments). Having identified these conditions, EcoAdvance will showcase successful solutions and the people who did them so as to reduce the fragmentation and confusion surrounding the information and guidance currently available to practitioners trying to implement freshwater ecosystem restoration projects.
