- Abstract
- The promotion of Austrian aquaculture farms (especially through the strategic plan "Aquaculture 2020") causes an increase in the production quantities of edible fish, which at the same time causes an increase of category 3 fish slaughter by-products. The aim of this project is to find a practical utilization method to efficiently use the slaughter by-products and to integrate them into the economic cycle. At the fish producing and processing practice partner (Waller- & Satzfischzucht Sigleß e.U.) the machine VRS-Jumbo, which can process category 3 slaughter by-products from aquaculture to "fish meal", is tested. Preliminary tests with the VRS-Jumbo in Switzerland served to verify the technical functions of the machine. However, further investigations are necessary for valid data and results. Results from these investigations will be analyzed and published by the scientific partner (BOKU). The processing of slaughter by-products with the VRS-JUMBO machine represents a novelty for Austria with a great need for research. This project aims to open new ways for the Austrian aquaculture sector, which is especially characterized by the increase of resource efficiency, the realization of a circular economy and the securing of domestic resources and the herewith associated independence from the feed market.
