Hemerobystudy South-Tyrol - assessement of naturalness in the forests of South Tyrol.
Abstract
The goal of the study is, to characterize the naturalness of forests in South Tyrol. On the plots of the italian forest inventory detailed studies about the hemeroby of the forest are made with a similar methodology to the project in Austria (Grabherr et al. 1998). The difference between the actual vegetation and the potential natural vegetation (PNV) is taken as an indicator for the hemeroby of the forest. Influence of man is characterized by means of disturbances (e.g. harvesting, forest roads, tourism). For instance species diversity of trees and ground vegetation, quantity and quality of deadwood are used to characterize the actual vegetation. 35 % of the sample points can be considered as natural or near-natural, 41 % have been moderately changed compared to the optimal state. 22 % of the forests in South-Tyrol can be refferred to as considerable changed by human influence and 2 % are artifical and hence far away from a natural forest ecosystem.
