Consequences from a crown defoliation inventory in 1990 in the forest management unit Wildalpen for silvicultural planning.
Abstract
The project area are the protection forests of the management unit Wildalpen. The management objectives of these forests focus on a sustained yield of water production for the City of Vienna. Though it has been perceived crown defoliation on the main tree species of the management unit, alternative silvicultural methods had to be found. Inventory and remote sensing data like the crown defoliation classes according to the Austrian forest health assessment, potential of regeneration, biotic and abiotic damages were raised. Also a map of the potential natural vegetation (in sensu Tüxen) was made. The inventory data and all other ecological informations were used for silvicultural planning. Silvicultural measures were evaluated for a sustained yield of water production.
