ANN-ETFRN (Austrian National Node - European Tropical Forest Research Network) / Node Tropical Forest Research - Austrian Network Environmental Research.
Abstract
ETFRN (European Tropical Forest Research Network)was established on the initiative of the Directorate General XII (Science, Research and Development) of the European Commission, in October 1991. The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) aims to contribute to the international efforts towards wise, sustainable management and protection of (sub)tropical forests and woodlands. For this purpose, ETFRN creates different fora for information exchange and discussions. The network also gathers data and publishes information on European institutes and projects involved in tropical and subtropical forest research. ETFRN has member institutes in 16 European countries (URL: http://www.etfrn.org/etfrn/etfrn-nodes.html). In each country, network activities are coordinated by one of the member institutes, which acts as the ETFRN national node. The Institute of Forest Ecology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna, hosts the national node since 1993. Even though Austria's capacity in tropical forest research is not comparable with the expertise and manpower of former colonial countries (UK, France, ...) it can contribute significantly in specialised disciplines such as biology of tropical forests, ecosystemrestoration, and ecologically appropriate forestry in mountainous countries.
