Abstract
Air quality measurement networks such as the Europe-wide EMEP network have been installed, among other reasons, for tracking the success of emission reductions. In the past, this was possible only in a limited way because atmospheric transport and disper-sion couples emission and observed ambient concentrations and deposition. The project 'Inverse modelling of atmospheric trace constituents with lagrangian models on the European scale' is about the development and application of methods which allow to derive information on the sources of respective constituents from the wealth of existing air quality measurements, using dispersion models. For this purpose, source-receptor-relationships (how much contributes each source region to the impact at a measurement site during a measurement interval?) will be derived using numerical dispersion models. The emission strength in each source region will then be optimized in a way that the computed concentrations fit best the observed ones. In the present project, which is restricted to linear relationships as a first step, this is accomplished through the solution of a linear system of equations. In order to guarantee a reasonable solution of this gener-ally ill-conditioned problem, additional conditions have to be built in (regularisation). The methodology shall be applied to the recent European Tracer Experiment (ETEX) and to the iodine and caesium emissions of Chernobyl as well as the sulfur dioxide emission in Europe. All results will be compared with conventional emission inventories whose generation still suffers from a variety of methodological and practical problems and which are thus subject to considerable uncertainties. Another application are heavy metals for which even less is known about their emissions.
