In one of the two selected research areas (Kobernaußerwald) twig fungi on Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) represent an essential destabilizing factor. During the first three years the effects of restoration measures on the twig and branch dieback of Norway spruce, caused by plant-parasitic fungi, will be investigated. In particular it should be found out whether the pathogenicity of the three fungi Sirococcus strobilinus, Pezicula livida and Macrophoma sp. depends on different nutritional and stress conditions of the hosts. In addition to an assessment of the virulence of the individual fungi, thorough examinations of the topography and the histopathology of fungal infections and succession of infections have to be performed. In the following phase of the programme the phytopathological investigations will be extended to root-fungi, which are an important destabilizing factor in the second research area (Henndorf).
