Cormorant monitoring 1997/98 in Lower Austria.
Abstract
Since the mid-eighties the clearly increasing number of migrating cormorants, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, in middle Europe during the winter season has become also a severe subject of conflict between nature conservationists, ornithologists and fisheries in Austria lately. Referring to Article 9 of the determinations of the Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the Conservation of Wild Birds, the district government of Lower Austria issued a time-limited regulation, which allowed the harassment and shooting of a limited amount of cormorants in special defined river sections of the country (trout and grayling region). The consequences and effects of these harassment actions were monitored to document and evaluate the observed results. The following investigations were taken and the following data were collected: simultaneous roosting-counts to determine the total number of migrating birds in the country, preferred regions of regional distribution, daily activity surveys, exploitation of activity and shooting-reports, processing of shot cormorants, food analysis from stomac and intestinal contents, collection and interpretation of relevant fish biology data.
