Life-project "Unterer Inn": Investigations on fish biology in the "Reichersberger Au" (River Inn, Upper Austria)
Abstract
The project area of the Inn hosts several species of fishes listed in Annex II of the FFH-Directive (92/43/EEC), i.e. Aspius aspius (Asp), Cottus gobio (Bullhead), Hucho hucho (Danube-Salmon) and Rhodeus sericeus amarus (Bitterling). The pristine fish community was dominated by Chondrostoma nasus (Nase),Barbus barbus (Barbel),Hucho hucho (Danube-Salmon) and Thymallus thymallus (Grayling). A management plan was gained as a result of an investigation which formed the basis for harmonizing fisheries management and conservation needs. The investigation dealt with species numbers, distributions and migration within impoundments, recruitment, harvesting and stocking. The essential conclusions are: Stocking is unnecessary due to successful recruitment (especially concerning Abramis brama (Common Bream),Esox lucius (Pike)and Stizostedion lucioperca (Pike-Perch). Elimination of allochthone species, especially Anguilla anguilla (Eel),has to be intensified. Spawning areas need to be designated as protected areas.
