Limnological investigations of created strucutres in the head race of the power plant Aschach, Danube River
Abstract
In 1989 ecological surveys demonstrated a deficit of gravel bank elements in the head of the impoundment of the power-plant Aschach/Danube. This fact is also reflected by the extremely high shares of habitat typical fish species, which particularly depend on such structures. This deficit can partly be compensated with the construction of slightly overflown gravel structures and low-current zones. Five years after completition of the structuring the ecological effectiveness of the construction is controlled by means of limnological investigations. The fish-ecological evaluation of the structuring measure proves the general functioning of the structures as elements to promote the original fish fauna. On the one hand, the measures promote reproduction success, habitats of juveniles and the formation of habitat-typical fish populations, on the other hand, as a desirable effect, ubiquitous species are restricted in their development, which were documented as the dominant fauna elements in the course of the pre-investigations.
