Determination of 234U, 235U, 238U and 232Th in Industrial Ores by On-line High Performance Ion Chromatography Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HPIC-ICP-SMS)
Abstract
For industrial concerns, receiving control of milling grade ores and intermediate products is indispensable. One of the most important parameters determined is the radioactivity of the materials since they may contain considerable amounts of radioactive isotopes. In the last years a new directive on basic standards for radiation protection of workers and the general public has been adopted by the European Union and will take effect in the EU member states not later than May 2000. The directive lays down isotope dependent limit values for activity concentration. As a consequence, the activity concentration of every single isotope has to be controlled in addition to the total activity of a sample. In this project, the advantages of the coupling of HPLC with ICP-SMS with respect to the matrix effects and spectral interferences are described and applied in combination with other analytical methods. Activity concentrations of 234U, 235U, 238U and 232Th are determined in industrial ores and intermediates (e.g. Ceritecarbonate, Ceroxide, Pyrochlore ore, Zircone) by HPIC-ICP-SMS.
