Ecological Risk Assessment of PAH-Contaminated Sites by the Application of Bioassays
Abstract
In the course of biodegradation of PAHs, metabolites may be formed and accumulated due to incomplete microbial breakdown of the original pollutant. These intermediates are suspected to be even more toxic than the native compounds. However, generally they are not detected when applying standard analytical methods. Therefore the development of suitable chemical methods is required. Contrary to the development of specific analytical techniques, the application of bioassays will give an overall response as toxic substances are formed and released during biodegradation. Moreover, bioassays provide information on the capability of the remediation technology in reducing toxicity and risk posed by the contaminated site. Used as a tool for site specific risk assessment, the appropriate application of bioassays enables a cost effective use of funds for remediation purposes.
