Development, Evaluation and Implementation of a Standardised Fish-based Assessment Method for the Ecological Status of European Rivers A Contribution to the Water Framework Directive (FAME)
Abstract
The objective of the proposed project is to develop, evaluate and implement a new fish-based assessment method for the ecological status of European rivers in direct support of the Water Framework Directive to guarantee a coherent monitoring of the ecological status in all member countries. The new method will be developed by the means of a large central database of about 15000 fish samples (sites) covering about 5000 rivers of 16 European eco-regions contributed by 23 partners. The method will include predictive and hintcasting models to characterise undisturbed reference conditions and response models enabling us to quantify the amount of deviation between the reference and degraded status. The new method will be developed in close co-operation with Applied Partners integrated in the project consortium to ensure its successful application by end-users and to support its implementation into the WFD.
