Abstract
A significant problem in wheat cultivation in Europe is the contamination of cereals with mycotoxins due to the infestation with phytopathogenic fungi of the group Fusarium. The cultivation of resistant varieties is the most appropriate control measure. The project will contribute to the development of Fusarium head blight resistant wheat cultivars for cultivation in Europe.
Accumulation of genes encoding for different resistance mechanisms will lead to cultivars with an acceptable level of resistance to Fusarium and minimal toxin accumulation. We follow 3 complementary strategies:
1) improvement of conventional selection for resistant lines based on the phenotype after initiating the disease by artificial infection in the field (Workpackage 1),
2) development of molecular markers for selection at the genetic level (Workpackage 2), and
3) development of new innovative selection techniques (in vitro selection and candidate re-sistance genes )(Workpackage 3).
