Influence of the slurry additive "effective micro-organisms" on ammonia, methane, nitrous oxide and odour emissions during storage of dairy cattle and pig slurry
Abstract
The research project investigates the influence of the slurry additive "effective micro-organisms" (EM) on ammonia, methane, nitrous oxide and odour emissions during storage of dairy cattle and pig slurry. Emission rates are quantified with the large open dynamic chamber developed by ILUET. About 10 m3 of differently treated slurry are stored in slurry tanks that are buried into the ground. Emissions will be followed for c. 90 days. Sampling interval is at least twice a week for 6 hours. Gaseous emissions of NH3, CH4 and N2O are quantified with a high resolution FTIR spectrometer. A TOC analyser measures VOC emissions. Through the small sampling interval, the exact determination of gas concentration and air flow and through the pilot scale design, the experiments allow an accurate quantification of emission rates. Experiments comprise the following treatments: 1. Dairy cattle slurry without additive 2. Dairy cattle slurry with EM 3. Pig slurry without additive 4. Pig slurry with EM 5. Pig slurry with EM, that had been fed to the pigs
