Abstract
In-situ and/or on-site technologies are an attractive alternative to conventional remediation methods. Anyhow, for in-situ technologies it is of importance to develop reliable methods for testing the efficacy of in-situ technologies, both to be better able to predict the potential effect of the measure taken and to prove the suitability of the chosen method for the authorities. For that purpose we should try to define - in qualitative and quantitative terms - suitable and reliable parameters for comparison of different remediation techniques.
The main goals of INTERLAND, consisting of 4 project packages and one common interdisciplinary monitoring project, is to bundle relevant expertise in the field of abandoned landfill and soil remediation with special emphasis on in-situ technologies including physical, chemical and biological methods and to use this expertise to (i) develop new technologies or to optimise existing methods with special emphasis on monitoring of the efficacy of the method and (ii) to act as a partner in this field for Austrian industry and authorities by developing standards as country wide basis for a specific decision tool for selection of suitable remediation methods. This should lead to cheap and effective alternative remediation techniques that facilitate remediation of higher number of contaminated sites and old landfills compared to the expensive ¿dig and dump¿- methods that are currently the mostly applied.
