Lifetimes of high-strength materials
Abstract
It has been detected some years ago that high strength materials like some specified high strength steels, may fail after low load amplitudes and extremely high numbers of cycles, like typically 109 cycles, though it had been assumed before that they would be safe below a specific low fatigue load (endurance limit). Invesitigations are performed in cooperation with Japanese researchers, using the ultrasonic fatigue technique, working at a testing frequecy of 20.000 Hz. This technique has been developed to a reliable and accurate method, allowing measurements in the very-high cycle regime within hundred to thousand times shorter testing times.
