S-layer templated nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes arrays (AFOSR)
Abstract
The main objective of this project is the development of self-assembly technologies based on crystalline bacterial cell surface layer proteins (S-layers) as patterning elements for the bottom-up fabrication of highly ordered metallic nanoparticles (¿superlattices¿) or carbon nanotube arrays (¿brush structures ¿). We will attempt to combine the remarkable self-assembling properties of S-layers with the novel electronic and optical properties of these functional nanometer sized materials. A fundamental limitation to realizing the outstanding conducting or mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes is the inability to produce ordered carbon nanotubes. Metallic catalyst particles, regularly bound to S-layers, will serve as templates in the formation of ordered carbon nanotubes arrays. The use of a bottom-up approach based on S-layers as templates in the formation of perfectly ordered arrays of metallic nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes is new in this research area. Current state of the art methods for self-assembly of nanoparticle arrays do not offer the control and flexibility of the S-layer approach.
