Abstract
During the last decades noise protection has become an essential factor in transport and health policy affairs. Noise control systems not only have to be considered at the stage of implementation of new transport concepts but must already be taken into account during the process of planning and financial conception.
Due to lack of space in populous areas, timber, concrete and steel still represent the favored construction materials for noise protection purposes. But esthetic aspects have gained increasing significance and the application of plants is of growing importance. Shrubs and trees diminish the spread of transport noises considerably, their capacity of fixation of harmful substances has been proved.
The aim of the investigations along the Brenner-Highway is the development of grove structures which raise the quality of life not only by revaluing the landscape esthetically but also by contributing to best possible noise protection. Center of gravity is put on the improvement of the structures considering the growing habits and on the selection of species with regard to salt resistance, heat and dry tolerance, dust sensitivity, bloom and fruit aspects.
