SRM-TEST The Development of Immuno Tests for specified Risk Material
Abstract
The presence of bovine brain, spinal cord, eyes, and tonsils (SRM) in meat products is strictly controlled under EU legislation to protect European consumers, but there are no adequate methods for policing such legislation, especially where the products are sterilised. The goal of this project is to develop rapid immunoassays in ELISA and Lateral Flow field kit systems, to detect specific SRM components. Tissue specific peptides will be identified using bioinfomatics and synthesised also peptide extracts of SRM will be prepared and affinity purified before being used as immunogens. These extracts and peptides will be used for the development of antibodies for these assays. Assays will be validated and used in a survey of European meat products. Results will be disseminated through publication in trade scientific journals and through the internet.
