Ecological management programme river Enns
Abstract
At the Styrian Enns River, the river channelization measures in the 19th and 20th century led to substantial quantitative and qualitative changes in riverine habitat conditions. The goal of this study is the identification of the main deficits in habitat integrity and to propose adequate rehabilitation measures for the improvement of the ecological status. For the development of the ecological management concept, as a first step, the channel bed forms and the bank structures as well as fish migration barriers are mapped based on the investigation of the fish fauna and the river morphology of the whole Styrian Enns River already made in 1996 (Jungwirth et al., 1996). The propsed measures include the restructuring of the river bed and the river banks as well as the amelioration of barriers for fish migration. In order to initate also regeneration processes in the adjacent riverine areas of the valley floor, relics of the former river landscape (e.g. floodplain forests, wetlands, floodplain water bodies) should be reconnected to the main channel.
