Abstract
This project is part of a monitoring programme which is dedicated to the evaluation of the presence of hazardous compounds in Austrian river water. It is financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) and serves to implement article 7 of the European Guideline 76/464/EWG regarding the contamination of communal waters by hazardous material. Through article 7 each member state is committed to set quality goals which shall help to reduce water contamination. The working committee „Chemie/Überwachung Ziele“ (experts from all over Austria and the BMLFUW) has listed the target analytes and corresponding quality tasks in a special document on 30 April 2003. For the present project, analytical methods for the determination of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (CKW), monochloroacetic acid and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol have been developed, optimized and validated at the IFA-Tulln. In 2004, samples will be taken once a month from 32 sampling sites. Therefore, during 2004, 12 samples will be drawn per site. The 768 water samples will be analysed for the above-mentioned compounds at the IFA-Tulln according to the requirements of the permanent Austrian Water Quality Monitoring System. From the results of this study, the working commitee „Chemie/Überwachung Ziele“ will be able to check, whether the proposed quality targets which had been set for each parameter group could be fulfilled for Austria´s river water.
