Agrometeorology - Assistance in the introduction of new subject at Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry
Abstract
In the present time the only weather related subjects in curriculum of the students of Mendel University for Agriculture and Forestry (MUAF) are either Agroclimatology or Bioclimatology. They are focused on the climatology and only limited time is devoted to various meteorological applications. Furthermore with the reduction of the resources appropriated for the students’ field trips their interaction with “field conditions” and techniques of measurement has been greatly reduced. Still most of the students of the university will be faced in their professional carrier with the need to operatively evaluate and make decisions in connections with immediate or seasonal aberrations of the weather. Therefore also meteorology (or its applications) should be part of the curriculum of the students at MUAF as it is for a long time at the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (BOKU). For this reason the new course “Agrometeorology” will be introduced during the university year 2004/2005. The main motivation of this proposal is to utilize the long-term experience of teachers at the BOKU with teaching of the 4 related courses in the process of introducing of the similar course at MUAF. The goals of the projects should be fulfilled via the several interconnected steps: (i) Improvement of the course content prepared by the garantor of the subject and the seminar teacher during the planned visit of both Czech participants at BOKU Wien. (ii) Preparation of the English teaching materials taking advantage of the existing materials used at BOKU. (iii) The Austrian participants will organize short course on the energy balance and UVB measurements including the field trips for the Czech participants. (iv) The experience with use of the dynamic crop models and pest/pathogen prognosis models during seminars will be shared with the Czech participants. (v) Providing additional training to the Czech seminar teacher in leading practical seminars focused on the state of art measurement techniques. (vi) Austrian participants will directly participate in the first two semesters of the new course through invited lectures at the MUAF. These will be aimed at their field of expertise related to the merit of the course. By this approach number of MUAF students would gain (besides the knowledge itself) the valuable insight into the forms and standards of learning at one of the leading Austrian universities.
