Simulating Visitor Flows in Recreational and Protected Areas
Abstract
The need to manage touristic uses and to ensure sustainable development has become a critical issue for protected areas worldwide. Simulation is a modern tool, supporting decision makers while evaluating different management scenarios. The aim of the project is to create a visitor flow simulation in a heavily used area of the Danube Floodplains National Park (Lobau). An agent based modeling technique will be used to simulate behavior of individual visitors. The main focus of the research will be: • defining factors that affect spatial distribution of national park visitors, • defining environmental features which are relevant for decision making, • designing rules of synthetic agents’ behavior. Understanding reasons underlying visitors’ spatial behavior is a key step to manage the area successfully.
