Investigation on the population abundance of the Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) in mountain areas adjacent to Vienna
Abstract
The Mountain areas of Rax and Schneealpe belong to the most eastern range of distribution of the Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) in the Alps. Contrary to the coherent distribution of the Rock ptarmigan on ridges and crests of the Alps, the plateau character of Rax and Schneealpe causes more isolated local bird occurrences. Hitherto, such naturally isolated habitat situations have not been investigated in terms of Rock ptarmigan abundances. Thus, censuses on Rax and Schneealpe are planned which should complete our understanding of the bird´s distribution range. Few experiences on the occurrence, on the distribution and on the choice of breeding sites of Rock ptarmigan on lime substrate are to be proved.
