Nutrient- and heavy metal translocation in contaminated urban soils treated with various deicers - a comparative laboratory experiment
Abstract
Since 1992 regularly determinations of "total" heavy metal contents of urban and roadside soils are cariied out in the municipality of Vienna. Some of the parameter exceed the threshold values according to Ö-Norm 1075. Because of the generally alkaline soil pH of urban soils in Vienna, the heavy metal mobility is low. The amendment of the de-icer regulation may lead to higher salt concentrations in urban roadside soils and thus induce a remobilisation and release of adsorbed or organic compexed heavy metals, which can be translocated with the soil water to deeper soil horizons. Laboratory experiments will be carried out to compare the impact of various de-icers on the absorption and dislocation of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe).
