Development of a probiotic feed additive for pig production
Abstract
Renouncing the use of antibiotic growth promoters in animal production has to be strongly supported for many reasons. For the producer maintenance of productivity will always be an issue. The project therefore focuses on combined efforts to raise the awareness for quality in more than one aspect. Development of probiotic feed additives based on isolates from the animals gut is one approach to achieve protection against pathogenic micro-organisms. Effective combinations of probiotics are suitable to enhance animal performance, improve the immunoligical status and therefor animal well being. Nevertheless, to obtain registration as feed additive in the EC, such products have to be defined and need profound scientific evaluation.
