Data analysis of groundwater for drinking water use in an urban floodplain area, the Lobau in Vienna.
Abstract
Over the last 140 years the floodplain Lobau was mainly affected by hydromorphological changes due to the regulation of the River Danube. Therefore, especially the main exchange processes in the floodplain have been altered. These modifications concern primarily geomorphic dynamics, the rejuvenation of habitats as well as the hydrological connectivity by surface and groundwater exchange. All of theses changes affect also the groundwater quality. The investigation of the current status and the development of the groundwater quality over the last 12 years is a prerequisite for any future management activities of the floodplain. Thereby, the relationship of chemical and sanitary groundwater parameters and hydrological conditions along the wells of the drinking water plant (MA 31) in the Lobau will be investigated. The effects of quantity (groundwater-levels) on quality changes will be the main focus of the statistical analysis.
