Driver information system to protect persons in hazardous areas around agricultural and commerial vehicles
Abstract
A driver assistance system which could detect persons in hazardous zones around vehicles and warn drivers are not available on the market. Recent market systems (cameras, ultra-sound sensors, beep tones,..) cover only the activity field at the back of a vehicle. Dangers in front of or beside farm vehicles cannot be perceived by a signal or a picture. Drivers are con-fronted with a restricted field of vision due to construction, despite optimal visual acuity. A consortium, called ARGE Zeno, has been funded by partners from research and industry to submit the development of the prototype of a driver assistance system. It warns the diver when a person reaches the hazardous field around and under ignited or driving farm ma-chinery. Kids wear the slumbered micro wave transponder which can be integrated in clothing, a watch, a bracelet or a necklace. This transponder is quasi inactive outside of the hazardous zone and will be activated in the hazardous zones and communicates with a reader transmit-ter of the farm machinery. The usability should be possible for each moving farm vehicle. The driver should receive acoustic and visual warn signals as well as be informed about func-tional disorder. Rough test results indicate that slumbered transponders with both, directed microwave and almost unidirectional short wave field can fulfil the mentioned requirements. This combination guarantees an unbroken protection around farm machinery without radiation exposure for kids. This system should be available on the market as adapted version for farm machinery in use and as integrated version of a computer data logging system in new farm vehicles. The project includes a fundamental study of the target group’s requirements. These needs are mapped to technical system architecture utilising new communication technologies, able to fulfil all demands. First we will design and test a first prototype installed to a tractor. After security tests a sam-ple for a field trial at dedicated farms will be manufactured. This field trial will be accompa-nied by the security coaches of Sozialversicherungsanstalten. The consortium includes all required competences for scientific approved system design, the integration into the agricul-tural environment and field trial, and for sustainable coverage of the target groups.
