Early browsing as a successional element of mountain forest dynamics
Abstract
Early browsing can be evaluated as one important determinant of seedlings survival. Together with seed predation and later occurring browsing, it might be decisive for the dynamics of forest regeneration. Within the project the browsing pressure of various groups of herbivores (ruminating ungulates, small mammals and insects) on seedlings of Norway spruce (Picea abies), Silver fir (Abies alba) and Europen beech (Fagus sylvativa) will be examined using exclosure experiments.
