Abstract
The impacts of climatic changes can significantly alter a soil’s inherent quality. In this project, climatic effects on the soil resources of Alpine ecosystems are studied, with particular emphasis on soil organic matter dynamics. The study area is located on the Hochschwab karst massif in the Northern Calcareous Alps. Four methodological approaches are combined: (1) the empirical study of soils along a climatic gradient; (2) the translocation of soil cores to climatically different areas with subsequent monitoring of changes; (3) in-situ decomposition experiments in different elevation zones; and (4) simulation modelling. With the experimental data collected in this project, carbon and nitrogen cycling models will be calibrated for the studied Alpine environment. The models will then be used to assess the impacts of projected future climate changes on the soil resources and associated environmental consequences.
